The Surat Jewllery Manufacturers Association has always understood the importance of physical and mental wellbeing of our staff and artisans to boost creativity and productivity. Hence we conducted the health check up camp, to stay true to one of the 5 pillars of the association- Healthy SJMA.
In today’s fast-paced and competitive work environment, the physical and mental health of workers is more important than ever. A healthy workforce is essential for the productivity, creativity, and overall success of any organization. This article delves into the various reasons why maintaining good physical and mental health among employees is crucial and the benefits it brings to both the workers and their employers.
Physical Health
1. Productivity and Performance : Healthy employees are more productive. Physical well-being enables workers to perform their tasks more efficiently and with greater stamina. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate rest can significantly enhance an employee’s energy levels and concentration, leading to higher productivity.
2.Reduced Absenteeism : Physically healthy workers are less likely to take sick leaves. Regular health check-ups, a nutritious diet, and an active lifestyle can prevent many common illnesses, thereby reducing absenteeism and ensuring that employees are present and engaged in their work.
3. Lower Healthcare Costs: Investing in employees’ physical health can lead to substantial savings in healthcare costs for both employers and employees. Companies that promote health and wellness programs often see a reduction in medical claims and health insurance premiums.
4. Enhanced Morale and Job Satisfaction: When employees feel good physically, they tend to have higher morale and job satisfaction. This positive outlook can foster a more vibrant and collaborative work environment, leading to improved team dynamics and overall organizational culture.
Mental Health
1. Improved Focus and Decision-Making : Mental well-being is directly linked to an employee’s ability to focus and make sound decisions. Stress, anxiety, and other mental health issues can impair cognitive function, leading to mistakes and poor judgment. By supporting mental health, employers can enhance their workers’ clarity and effectiveness.
2. Increased Creativity and Innovation : A mentally healthy workforce is more creative and innovative. When employees are free from the burden of mental health issues, they can think more freely and come up with novel ideas and solutions, driving the organization forward.
3. Better Workplace Relationships : Mental health plays a crucial role in how employees interact with one another. Workers who are mentally healthy are more likely to communicate effectively, collaborate, and resolve conflicts amicably, leading to a more harmonious and productive workplace.
4. Retention and Attraction of Talent : Companies that prioritize mental health are more attractive to potential employees. A supportive and caring work environment can help retain existing talent and attract new hires who value a workplace that cares for their overall well-being.
Strategies for Promoting Physical and Mental Health
1. Wellness Programs : Implementing wellness programs that include fitness activities, healthy eating options, and stress management workshops can significantly improve employees’ health.
2. Mental Health Support : Providing access to mental health resources, such as counseling services, mental health days, and stress reduction programs, can help employees manage their mental health effectively.
3. Work-Life Balance : Encouraging a healthy work-life balance by offering flexible working hours, remote work options, and sufficient vacation time can prevent burnout and improve overall well-being.
4. Healthy Work Environment : Creating a work environment that promotes physical activity, such as ergonomic workstations and on-site fitness facilities, along with a culture of open communication and support, can enhance both physical and mental health.

Surat Jewelry Manufacturers Association: Pioneering Health Initiatives for Artisans and Employees.
The Surat Jewelry Manufacturer’s Association (SJMA) is setting a commendable example by integrating health services with business operations. As the first organization in the jewellery industry to implement such initiatives, SJMA conducts regular health check-ups for artisans and office staff without disrupting work. These screenings enable early diagnosis and timely treatment of conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure.
To date, over 1500 individuals have benefited from these health check-ups. SJMA aims to screen a total of 15,000 jewellery artisans in the near future.
